LIT241 / Hill Hero Analysis
Using the “Heroes Are Us” handout from class, write a brief comparative analysis the three hero characters: Raven, Maui and Chi Li. Consider the reason each of the myths may have been told, common archetypal traits, how the heroes take their risks, and the main hero types.
A comparative analysis in literary analysis means writing to explore the similarities and differences between the subjects. In rhetorical modes, this is referred to as comparison/contrast. It might help to create a table, something like the following:
Chi Li
Maui
Raven
Illegitimate Birth
No/Mortal
Yes/Demigod
Unknown
Helpers
Yes
Yes
No
Hero Type?
Win/Lose?
You can choose on which features to focus – so don’t feel like you have to cover everything – just what you feel is more pertinent to discuss. For example, none of our heroes was “exposed at birth” that we know of from these versions of the myths, so you don’t even need to discuss that – across the board, it’s a “negative” feature.
Focus this writing on the handout and your interpretation of the characters. You do not need to include in-depth references, retellings or quotes from the myth. However, if you say that Maui had helpers, you should list them briefly to support this. In some cases, such as whether or not Chi Li had helpers, is arguable, so you absolutely need to list who/what you mean by helpers.
